

LaVern A. Holt, 90, a resident of Deer Park, went home to be with his Heavenly Father January 8, 2017 at Bayshore Medical Center. LaVern Arzzro Holt was born to Margie and Floyd Holt on July 26, 1926 in McCrory, Arkansas.
He is a graduate of Lee College (Lee University), where he met the love of his life, Eveylene N. McCane. They were married on June 8, 1950, and on July 4, 1951 had their first child, Mary Lyndalene Holt and on August 11, 1954 they had their second child, Douglas LaVern Holt.
Together, they followed their calling into the ministry, which lasted over 60 years; then after the death of his wife; he continued with ministry 3 1/2 more years. He and his wife moved to Deer Park in 1988 to pastor the Deer Park Church of God from New Orleans, Louisiana where they pastored the Elysian Fields Church of God. L.A. Holt retired from the pastorate 10 years ago, but devoted himself to taking care of his wife through her illness until she passed away August 23, 2013.
After retiring from the pastorate, they transferred their membership from the Deer Park Church of God to the Praise Chapel Church of God in Webster, Texas. He loved his family and friends, and especially loved his Praise Chapel Church family. His dry sense of humor was sure to illicit a reaction to his hearers. He was known as "Grandfather" to his six grandchildren and his 14 great grandchildren.
L.A is survived by his daughter, Lynda Griffis and husband, Tom of Deer Park, Texas; son, Douglas Holt and wife Sandy of Paris, Texas and brother Aubrey Holt and his wife Dana of West Memphis, Arkansas.
He is survived by six grandchildren: Melodye Griffis Guidroz and husband Steve; Tommy Griffis and wife Wendy; Stephanie Griffis Gonzalez; Michael Griffis and wife Jill; Amber Holt Winters and husband, Robbie; Chace Holt and wife Kaylie. 14 great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 12, from 6-8 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 13, at 2 p.m. at Deer Park Church of God, 3822 Luella Avenue, Deer Park, TX 77536. Interment will follow at Grand View Memorial Park.
