Marcus Earl Welch of Pasadena, Texas went to be with his Lord on May 16, 2025, four days short of his 80th birthday after a two year battle with bladder cancer. Marcus was born an only child of Daniel Evern Welch and Eva Marie Witherspoon on May 20, 1945, in the Bobo Community, Timpson, Texas.
Marcus enlisted and proudly served four years in the U.S. Army Security Agency from 1965-1969. He served in Chitose, Japan from July 1966 thru November 1967 and Vietnam from November 1967 thru July 1969.
Marcus began his love for motorcycles in Japan with a 305 Honda. He and his Army buddy Donnie Head toured Japan taking many beautiful pictures. He owned eight motorcycles throughout his lifetime and enjoyed each one, even making two trips to Sturgis on his Harley, making lifelong memories with friends.
After his military career, he returned to Pasadena to marry his sweetheart on December 6, 1969, just one year after their first date.
Marcus worked for Houston Lighting and Power, Fluor Corporation, Brown and Root Construction, and the City of Houston, where he retired as a Journeyman Electrician after twenty-five years of service.
Marcus was artistic, drawing freehand flames and doing custom paint jobs on many motorcycle tanks over the years. Marcus enjoyed working with his hands repairing things and working on old cars. He boasted of having owned seventy-five known vehicles in his lifetime.
When Jason was about three, Marcus began buying Hot Wheels for him. He enjoyed cars so much that that he started acquiring Hot Wheels for himself as well. He continued this hobby until near his death. In his later years, he did part with a few to give to younger children of friends and family.
Marcus teased Kelly over the years about selling his 1963 Corvette Stingray to pay the hospital bill when she was born. He was on a Union strike with Houston Lighting and Power and had no insurance at the time. Wow, what it would have been worth today!
Marcus was a longtime member of Creekmont Baptist Church in La Porte, Texas. He and Elaine spent many years providing refreshments and sno-cones at Vacation Bible School. Marcus always had something to say to each child as they came through the line, always wanting to make them laugh.
Marcus and Elaine loved to have friends and family over to visit. He was famous for his homemade eggrolls and people were always excited to get an invitation to enjoy them.
Marcus loved his family. He attended all the Little League games, band concerts, and was an active Girl Scout Dad and Band Parent. He even secretly played Santa Claus at a band party. He was a friend to all and he had a way about him that made people comfortable. People would confide in him with their problems, even those he had just met. He was able to provide them with his positive outlook on life and he entertained his friends with his colorful, comical stories. Over the years, Marcus wrote short stories about different aspects of his daily life. He, of course, put his twist on things, stretching the truth in a way you knew it was a fib.
Marcus is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Elaine Connell Welch of Pasadena, his children Jason Lee Welch and wife Kristi of Pasadena, daughter Kelly Renee Welch of San Antonio, grandson Bradley James Welch of Pasadena and aunt, Ruth Hartley, of Nacogdoches. He is survived by numerous cousins.
