Thomas Allen Moon, 81, passed away on December 26, 2021, from complications after a long illness. Thomas was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, known for his love of God and his family. He was a man who always thought before he spoke, and had a subtle sense of humor and quiet wisdom. He will be dearly missed.
Born in Trinity, TX in October, 1940, and raised in Galena Park, TX, Thomas met and married his wife, Sandra Moon in 1959. After receiving a Basketball Scholarship, Thomas attended and graduated from the University of Corpus Christi in 1963. With two young children and beloved wife in tow, he then embarked on an educational and coaching career spanning over forty years, including over three decades working in education for Pasadena ISD.
“Coach Moon” as he was often called, had three great passions: Guiding our nation’s youth, teaching the word of God, and spending time and traveling with his close-knit family. His travels included trips to Disneyworld with his children and grandchildren, road trips through nearly every state in the U.S.A, and numerous forays into foreign countries with his wife.
Thomas coached football and basketball for over 20 years at Jackson Intermediate, Southmore Intermediate, Pasadena High School and South Houston High School. He was also an assistant principal at Dobie High School for ten years. Mr. Moon is credited with starting one of the first chapters of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in the Houston area at Pasadena High School in the late 70’s. During his tenure and after retirement, he supervised all of PISD’s Football and Basketball games at Veteran's Memorial Stadium and Stoney Phillips Gymnasium. He took great joy in announcing the Varsity Baseball games at McGuire Field. If you drove by the stadium during the early 2000’s, you could often hear his booming voice calling the games. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at Monument Baptist, formerly Thomas Avenue Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
Throughout his life, his wife of 62 years, Sandra Roberts Moon, provided him support and joy. Thomas is survived by his wife; sons Timothy Moon, Allen Moon and wife Rosa; sister Shirley Clark and husband Alan; grandchildren Cassandra Moon Adams and husband Jacob, Stacie Ortega Lee and husband A.J., Jacquelynn Moon Leyva and husband Leo, Marylin and Evelyn Moon; and great grandchildren Isla Adams and Marina Leyva; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Jewel Moon, step-mother Alma Moon, and sister Jackie Moon Brewer.
