Robert was born to Catarino Rodriguez and Josefina Benavides Rodriguez in Premont, Texas on November 7, 1937. His beloved hometown instilled a lifelong passion for family, the outdoors, and hard work, and he loved to talk about those things to anyone who would listen. Robert met his bride, Mary at a dance hall located between Premont and Falfurrias, and they continued their dance throughout a long happy marriage of 62 years.
Robert honorably served in the United States Air Force, and then proudly dedicated 30 years to an illustrious career with Texaco Oil and Gas. In fact, one of his favorite things to talk about was work, often answering the phone (at home) with, “Texaco, this is Robert!” Robert was proud of Premont and the legacy he left as a four-year letterman football player, along with his #48 jersey, which lives on in infamy in that tiny town.
Robert also deeply enjoyed his hobby of bowling, having earned many trophies and honors with an average of 200, and personal best 290 game. Even more than his heritage and hobbies, Robert deeply loved his family: his two sons, and three grandchildren were his world.
He is survived by his beautiful wife, Mary Rodriguez, his sons Robert Rodriguez Jr. and Mario (Lindsey), Rodriguez, grandchildren, Andrea (Steve) Gutierrez, Devin Joel, Jeremy Nathaniel, great grandchildren, Jason Matthew Gutierrez, Margot Marie Gutierrez, sisters, Nelda (Eliseo †) Chapa, Viola (Corando) Montemayor, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Catarino and Josefina Rodriguez, and his baby sister, Rosabel (David) Hewitt.
A memorial service will be held at Funeraria del Angel Palm Valley in Pharr, Texas on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
