Roel Benavidez, born on December 11, 1931, in Agualeguas, Nuevo León, Mexico, to Jose Benavidez and Alejandra Cantu, was the third youngest of 11 children. He shared a deep bond with his siblings and was the last to pass. In 1955, he moved to the United States as part of the Braceros program, where he met his future wife, Carmen Segura. The two married in 1956 and had three children: Roel Jr., Esequiel, and Blanca. They remained married for 65 years until her passing in 2019.
A hard-working man, Roel worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He often left the Rio Grande Valley to follow the harvest seasons up North. In 1969, he joined HP Fowler Construction, where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 1989. Afterward, he worked for the Pharr Police Department in the maintenance department from 1989 to 2004, retiring at 73 years old. His coworkers affectionately called him "Mr. B." He was known for his infectious laughter, great sense of humor, and always greeting everyone with a smile.
Roel was a lover of music, especially corridos and norteña, and enjoyed singing. He also had a deep fondness for Mexican food and coffee. Over the years, he formed lasting friendships, with many friends stopping by to reconnect after long periods of time. Following his retirement from the Pharr Police Department, Roel spent many enjoyable years playing cards with a group of close friends, a tradition that lasted for at least 15 years.
Above all, Roel loved his family deeply. He was a devoted father and grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love. He had seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom cherished him for his warmth, humor, and generosity.
