

Peggy Gilbert, age 81, resident of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Midtown Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled at Lakewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Phenix City, Alabama on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, 2 p.m. with Reverend Michael Greer officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens, Phenix City, Alabama. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 5-7 p.m.
Mrs. Gilbert, daughter of the late Bernard Eugene Griggs and Evangeline Cox Griggs, was born November 4, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was a homemaker and retired from Phenix City School System where she worked faithfully for many years. Mrs. Gilbert was a longtime member of First Assembly of God Church and loved to cook, work in the yard, and attend to her chickens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene "Gene" Gilbert, Sr; a daughter, Hazel Ann Gilbert; and twin sister, Nancy Jean Johnston. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by one daughter, Ann (John) Williams of Phenix City; two sons, Montie (Susan) Gilbert of Phenix City and Harrell (Deidra) Gilbert of Cullman, Alabama; three sisters, Paula Edwards, Joyce Greer, and Evangeline (Jerry) Thornton, all of Phenix City; three brothers, Howard (Jacqueline) Griggs of Phenix City, Floyd (Joyce) Griggs of Warner Robins, Georgia, and Ray (Patricia) Griggs of Seale, Alabama; five grandchildren, Beth (Danny) Sasser, John (Fiance’ Kenslie Longstreet) Williams III, Montie Gilbert, Jr., Jacob Gilbert, and Jeri Gilbert; two great-grandchildren, Bryson and Houston; many other relatives and friends.
