Shawn Patrick Romo was born in Mountain View, California on March 12, 1996. After spending a short time in Milpitas, California, his family relocated to San Jose where he grew up and attended school. Growing up, Shawn developed a passion for sports, sci-fi, and fantasy. He loved to watch sports, especially the Chargers, Giants, and Sharks. He spent hours playing card games like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, and eventually graduated to Warhammer during high school. He loved to collect and read comics, and would explain to anyone who would listen why Batman was the greatest superhero of all. But one passion that transcended all of his years was his love for Star Wars. However, Shawn’s favorite activity was spending time with his family. He loved planning family game night and watching a Friends marathon. He loved challenging anyone to a game of Chess or Scene It and going out to dinner and a movie. He made many of these nights possible and became the glue that held everyone together. He even looked forward to the simple and mundane activities if he knew he was doing them with his family. In high school, Shawn joined the wrestling team. He had no experience, but he quickly grew to enjoy it. In the Santa Teresa mat room, he met coaches who believed in him and teammates who cheered him on. The camaraderie he built with his teammates through the tough practices and tournaments would leave an indelible mark on him. Even after his last match, his teammates and his coaches were always in his thoughts. It was the most important experience of his time in high school. In the spring of his senior year, Shawn went for a short tour of potential universities. One of the schools he visited was Arizona State University. His first glimpse of the school came as he was driving into Tempe on Rural Road. The moment he saw the Sun Devil Stadium, he fell in love with ASU. No other school stood a chance after that. The following fall, he entered Arizona State University as a freshman and studied communications. He was honored to be a part of the Sun Devil community and would share with everyone why ASU was the best college in the U.S., and why all its sports should be ranked #1. Little did Shawn or his family know, ASU would bring him to find and accept Christ as his Lord and Savior. On April 19, 2015, Shawn was baptized. His baptism brings us comfort because those who believe in God do not die, but live and tell the good works of the Lord (Psalm 118:17).
“He who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die” (Matthew 11:25-26). We may be parted from him for a time, but one day, we will have the joy of seeing him again.
