November 2, 1970 - December 22, 2022
Brent Morenz passed away at home in Pompano Beach, Florida, on December 22, 2022. He was born on November 2, 1970, in Denver, CO, the son of Melinda Ricci Morenz of San Angelo, TX, and Brian John Morenz of Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Brent’s earliest years took him to the home bases of professional hockey teams on which his father played, last for the San Diego Mariners in San Diego, CA. His most formative childhood years were spent in Santa Barbara, CA, next door to his Ricci cousins, a family of all boys. The resulting clan of stair-stepped aged boys ruled the neighborhood cul-de-sac with never-ending activity, and they remain close to this day: Steve Ricci, Jr., Shawn Ricci, and Brian Ricci, and younger brother Shea Morenz. Days on the Pacific at Hope Ranch Beach held particularly fond memories for him.
Returning as a family to his mother’s hometown, San Angelo, TX, in his early teens, Brent attended Robert E. Lee Junior High School and San Angelo Central High School. He was a natural golfer and played for the Bobcats’ varsity golf team, a passion and pastime he continued to pursue long after graduation. Brent attended The University of Texas at Austin, which was a much-beloved period for him. He served as a member and Rush Captain of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was a member of Silver Spurs, the honorary student service organization responsible for the care and transportation of BEVO, the Longhorns’ mascot. Brent graduated from Angelo State University with a B.S. in Business and translated his love of golf into a first career at Golfsmith International in Austin, TX. Throughout his life, Brent’s ability to connect with people enhanced not only his professional marketing pursuits in Texas, the Midwest, and lastly in Florida, but also his personal life. He was quick to make colleagues and clients his friends.
Brent possessed a magical personality laced with wonderful off-hand humor and the gift of authentic acceptance. In spite of hardships in his life, he remained in touch with friends and family with his cherished irreverent and humorous text messages, telephone calls, golf outings, and visits. Brent was loved deeply, and time spent with the many people he cared about were the highlights of his life. He always returned their love with his complete heart, and he will be missed.
Brent is survived by his mother Melinda Morenz (San Angelo, TX), father Brian Morenz (partner Linn Sexton and her children Chris, Pat and Shannon of San Diego, CA), brother Shea (wife Christine and their children Lillie, Hope and Shea, Jr. of Houston, TX), uncle Steve Ricci (wife Lynn of Santa Barbara, CA), aunt Carol Ricci Burnett (husband Howard of Pocatello, ID), and cousins Stevie, Shawn and Brian Ricci (and their loving families in California), and Elizabeth, Caroline, and Jacqueline Burnett (and their loving families in San Francisco and Chicago).
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 11:00am on Friday, January 27th, 2023 in Austin, Tx.
Donations to organizations in support of substance abuse and mental health recovery in your local communities are encouraged. The family is grateful to 1st Step Behavioral Health in Florida (https://firststepbh.com/) for its support and friendship to Brent and to the many special friends met within that circle who support each other.
