Dan is survived by his wife, Sandi; his children – Jason of Waco, Texas, his wife Leann and grandchildren Brayden and Jace; and Jonathan Brent of Whitney, Texas, his wife Kam and grandchildren Jonah and Leo; and his brothers and their spouses James and Rhonda of Memphis, Tenn., and David and Darlene of Thomasville, Ga., and his brother-in-law and spouse Michael Jay and Susan Lott of Wiggins, Miss. He is predeceased by his parents, J.A. and Ethel Cook of Tupelo, Miss.
Dan was born in Tupelo, Miss., on October 29, 1949. He graduated from William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss., and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. On June 12, 1971, he married Sandi, a cheerleader at William Carey. Dan was a longtime servant of the Lord, ministering to congregations in the areas of music, youth and senior adults later in his career in churches in Tupelo, Miss., Gulfport, Miss., Mansfield, La., Alexandria, La., and Groves, Texas, at First Baptist Church, where he served for nearly 20 years. Dan loved traveling and supporting his wife, children and grandchildren, and church members, as well as following sports teams from Mississippi State, Texas A&M and most recently Baylor universities. For the past year, he was cared for by the wonderful people and services of Compassion Hospice.
A visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Grammier-Oberle in Port Arthur, which will be followed by a celebration of his life immediately following at 11 a.m. Reverends Phil Weber of Nederland, Texas, and Charles Higgs of College Station, Texas, will officiate. Flowers and condolences may be offered at 4841 39th Street in Port Arthur.
