

Iris “Gail” Slocum passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, at the age of 89 while residing at Cascades at Port Arthur. Born on November 22, 1935, in Port Arthur, Texas, Gail was the beloved daughter of William Davis and Ruby Curry Garrett.
A dedicated student, Gail attended Thomas Jefferson High School before furthering her education at the University of Texas, where she excelled as an honor student. She was an esteemed member of the Orange Jackets and was honored as a nominee for the Sweetheart of the University. Her passion for knowledge led her to a fulfilling career as a librarian, serving the Port Arthur and San Antonio school systems with dedication and care.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Gail was deeply involved in her community. She was an active member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and a devoted supporter of the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” program. A talented writer, Gail authored and published children's books, sharing her gift for storytelling with young readers. Her creativity extended to the arts, where she pursued painting as an amateur artist.
Gail was preceded in death by her beloved son, William Garrett Slocum. She is survived by her cherished sister, Sherrie Garrett Massin, and her husband Edward. She also leaves behind her loving nieces and nephews: Lori Teller and her husband Craig, David Massin and his wife Heidi, Jill Bradford and her husband Jon, along with great-nieces and nephews Austin Teller, Kaitlyn Massin, and Sabrina Bradford.
A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home, located at 4841 39th Street, Port Arthur, Texas, on February 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with a lunch gathering to follow.
Gail's legacy of kindness, creativity, and service will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved her.
