Alexander “Alex” Hilary Laing, 62 of Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed from this life on May 21, 2015 surrounded by family after a long and courageous battle with prostrate cancer. Alex was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 3, 1953 to Agnes (Findlay) Nicholson and the late Louis Laing. As a child and young adult, Alex attended St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York. He recently reconnected with his spiritual and Christian beliefs at St. Paul's AME Church in Fort Pierce, Florida
Alex attended public and parochial school (St. Pascal Baylon High School) in Queens, New York. He also attended college in Wharton, Texas (Wharton Junior College) and Portales, New Mexico (Eastern New Mexico University), where he received his undergraduate degree and MBA.
Always willing to help and advise, Alex was known to philosophize until people made excuses to get away – he loved people and adored his family. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. Landscaping and painting allowed him to express his creativity. He loved the people of St. Vincent where his mother and many of his maternal relatives were born.
He leaves, not to mourn his passing but, to celebrate his life, his loving and devoted wife Dianne Laing; children Alexis and Bryan Laing from his previous marriage to Michelle Williams-Laing; stepchildren Jason, Clyde, Jenkins, Jeb, Jeffrey, and Adana Augustine; mother Agnes Nicholson; sister Kelcy (Daniel) Hardrick; and many friends and extended family.
Alex was predeceased by his grandparents, George and Emily Findlay and Fred and Mattie Laing; his aunts and uncles including Hilary Alexander and Agnes Bute, and Claudine Haynes; his great grandparents, John and Christiana Haynes; and his stepfather Lloyd Nicholson.
Alex asked that men, especially men of color, prioritize their prostrate health care needs. He also asked that families reconnect, as life is short and family is precious.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Seth Rosen and the staff at Hematology-Oncology Associates of the Treasure Coast for their professional and caring service, and the kind staff at St. Lucie Medical Center.
