

Gene left the service in 1956 and went back to school. He attended Portland Junior College and ultimately worked his way through a Master’s degree at UMO. Gene married Margaret Urbano in 1962 and began his career as a guidance counselor. After a year in Gardiner, Gene and Margaret moved to Rumford where Gene served as a guidance counselor in the Rumford school system until retirement.
Shortly after getting married, Gene and Margaret bought a summer camp on Peaks Island which became the center of life for their growing family. Once Gene arrived for the summer he rarely left unless forced to by his wife. He was a man who was content with what he had – a loving family, a job working with kids in a town where he could ski in the winter, and Peaks Island – his most favorite place on earth with family and wonderful lifelong friends.
Gene was predeceased by his son Bill and his brothers George and John and sister Mary Bennett Caterina.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, son James Bennett and his wife Kathy and their children Christian, Willy, Mikey, and Johanna of York, Maine. Daughter-in-law Terry Bennett and children Katie, Joe, and Matt of Gorham. son, Joseph of Portland, and daughter Maria Bennett Malone and children Loden, Sylas and Zephyr of Asheville, N.C. Brother-in-law Jack Caterina and his children John Caterina, Jean-Marie Caterina and Jane Caterina Greer. Sister-in-law Mary Virginia Bennett and her children Peter Bennett, Michael Bennett and Andrea Bennett Dickson. Sister-in-law Patricia Urbano Tanguay and Joe Tanguay and family, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
