He was born in Bangor, Maine on October 23, 1941 to Thomas (Bunny) and Mildred Flanigan.
He attended schools in Bangor and graduated from John Bapst Catholic High School in 1959. He attended Maryknoll Seminary then St Dunstan’s University, Charlottetown, P.E.I., Canada where he received a B.A degree in philosophy in 1965. He served two years active duty in the US Army in 1965-1967 receiving the Army Commendation Medal. For one school year he taught high school English at Pemetic HS, Southwest Harbor, Maine. He then worked as a reporter and staff writer for a newspaper in Petersburg. Va. After further studies at the U. of Maine, Orono he was employed by New England Telephone Co. until his retirement in 1991.
John was predeceased by his companion William J Theriault, his parents, a sister Catherine ‘Katie’ Flanigan Nadeau, and one nephew. He is survived by two brothers Thomas J Flanigan, Van Buren, Maine and Richard J Flanigan of Newtown, Pa.; one sister Sarah F Hart, Orrington, Maine, five nephews and one niece.
Private family commemoration will be held at a later date.
