Born in Peabody, Massachusetts, Mike was the son of the late William and Jane (Barnes) Caron. He was their oldest son and third child of six. During his high school years at St. Mary’s in Lynn, Massachusetts, Mike met his beloved soulmate, Kathleen Rogers, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.
Upon graduating from high school, Mike embarked on a 30-year career with New England Telephone Company, working in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. During his time with New England Telephone, Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bentley College and an MBA from Pace University. He retired from his position as Comptroller at New England Telephone and began second careers in Maine, first as Comptroller at Central Maine Power, and then as the Chief Financial Officer at Catholic Charities Maine. Upon his retirement, Mike continued to provide expertise through his service on several boards, including the Board of Maine Public Service, Bangor Hydro, Emera, and Versant Power.
Mike was the kind of husband, father, grandfather, and friend who brought adventure and purpose to every day. He could be depended upon to know the best lunch spots, golf courses, and car washes wherever he went. With his love of the ocean and Northern New England, he and Kathie happily made their home in Maine, where they could host “Sunshine Café” breakfasts for their frequent visitors, play golf (Mike at Toddy Brook and Kathie at Dutch Elm), and spend time with friends and family. Mike particularly relished watching his nine grandchildren participate in all kinds of activities, such as football, hockey, music, theater, and dance. He loved being their Pepe.
Mike and Kathie instilled a zest for outdoor fun with their young family and traveled in the summers by camper from Pennsylvania to Prince Edward Island. Later, they were seasonal campers at Lakeside Pines in Bridgton for many years. Mike enjoyed both sailing and motor boating on Long Lake. He especially enjoyed teaching his children to sail and waterski.
When he retired, Mike and Kathie spent winters in The Villages, Florida, taking in the beautiful sun and golfing with friends whenever possible. A man with a strong and abiding faith, he was an active member of Lake Deaton United Methodist Church, and recently attended St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk, Maine. He had a generous spirit, a mischievous sense of humor, and a kind heart.
Mike leaves behind his wife, Kathie, and his four children, Jane Kimble (Matthew) of Middlebury, Vermont, Amy Gaudrault (Thomas) of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Edward Caron of Massachusetts, Joseph (Jessica) Caron of State College, Pennsylvania, and daughter-in-law Ann Caron of Newburyport, Massachusetts. “Pepe” was especially cherished by his grandchildren Caroline Peterson (Simon) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Meredith Kimble of Middlebury, Vermont, Lila and Claire Gaudrault of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Edward “Teddy”, Michael “Will”, and Jean “Johnny” Caron of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and Allison “Allie” and William “Liam” Caron of State College, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his four sisters and one brother, Christina Harrington, Patricia Caron, Mary Crivello, and Anne Caron, all of Salem, MA, and Paul Caron of Lake Alfred, FL.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Southern Maine for their loving care of Mike. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice of Southern Maine, 390 US Route One Scarborough, ME 04074. A celebration of life will be held in the late spring
