Alfred Arthur Strauss Jr.

Alfred Arthur Strauss, Jr., of Springmoor Retirement Community, died Saturday, March 5, 2011. Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2011 in the Springmoor Auditorium, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. Interment will follow the service at 4:00 p.m. at Sparta Cemetery, Sparta, NC.

Mr. Strauss attended New York Military Academy, Cornwall-on Hudson, NY; Milford Preparatory School, Milford, CT; UNC Chapel Hill and awarded a Masters Degree in Education, cum-laude from Appalachian State University. After serving five years in the Air Force during WWII, he was honorable discharged as a major.

Most of his active business life was dedicated to the field of education in NC, many years at Wake Technical Community College from which he retired in 1986. He also served several years as Executive Secretary for the American Trucking Association in Washington, DC.

Mr. Strauss was formerly active in the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs, the United Way and currently a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Wanda Choate Strauss; daughter, Diane Strauss Roby of Petersburg, WV; son, Donald Choate Strauss of Statesville, NC, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
