Al was born and raised in Cleveland Heights Ohio. Growing up in his family with his parents Dorothy and Albert, and his sister Barbara and brother Jim, Al attended Cleveland Heights public schools. He worked at 'Zip's' drugstore as a student where he met his wife-to-be, Judy Jordan, in 1958. He married Judy in 1965 whilst attending Ohio State University, from which he graduated in 1966. He began his career with Packaging Corporation of America, initially in Middletown, Ohio and later moving on to Youngstown then Ashland, Ohio. In 1985, he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina with his business partner to establish their own company, Com-Tech packaging. Com-Tech was subsequently bought out by Concept Packaging and is currently owned by Box Board Products Inc. Al remained an integral part of the company until his retirement in August 2007.
Al was the proud father of David and Doug and grandfather to Hunter, Jacob, Isaac and Amparo. He spent the majority of his free time with his family, including his daughters-in-law, Ceci and Holley. His interests revolved around his family and friends, who were always instrumental in his developing passions, and with whom he was able to engage in his love of the outdoors. His lifetime passion was boating, but he also enjoyed tennis, golf, camping, travel, and cross country skiing. In addition to the outdoor activities, he also delighted his family and friends with his culinary talents and was a keen photographer, with a particular interest in nature, including butterflies and other fauna.
In 2008 Al and Judy embarked on the trip of a lifetime, travelling across the United States and Canada, exploring the towns and countryside as they went. Exploring the land had been something Al had looked forward to for a long time, and was happy to have had the opportunity to undertake this adventure.
Al will be remembered by all who knew him for his sharp one-liners and keen sense of humor. He was a genuine man who was true to himself and to those who knew him. Al was a great talker and one who always enjoyed a lively debate or the opportunity to share ideas. He could hold a conversation about almost anything and had a unique ability to find common ground with those he met, and could instantly put people at ease with his insatiable interest in others and his great warmth of heart.
Al always had a ready smile and retained a positive outlook throughout his life.
A memorial service will be held 7:00 PM Friday, April 8, 2011 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd, Raleigh, NC, 27609. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
