Ray was born and raised in Bridgeport, CT. After graduation from high school he joined the Armed Forces. Ray served in the Army Corp of Engineers from 1951 to 1953 when he received an Honorable Discharge. His service included a tour of duty in Korea. His training in the Army prepared him for a career with the State of Connecticut where he managed heavy road equipment.
In 1960 he married his wife Wanda and became a stepfather to her daughter Ann Marie. He had no other children. He loved being outdoors. His hobby was large and small woodworking. He also loved unusual cars, being the proud owner of a Packard Clipper and a Packard Golden Hawk sports car. Upon his retirement, he and Wanda enjoyed many trips throughout New England.
In late November 2007, Ray and Wanda moved from their home in Stratford, CT into Elmcroft Assisted Living, Raleigh NC so they could be closer to their daughter and son-in-law, Ann Marie and Tim Heckel. Ray was the proud grandfather of Andrew and his wife Tracy Heckel of Silver Spring, MD, and David Heckel of Los Angeles, California. He was great-grandfather to Laura, Emmett and Benjamin.
Ray’s family will receive friends on Monday, February 27, 2012 at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 5801 Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh NC 27609 from 12 – 12:30 pm. Following the visitation, there will be a funeral mass at 12:30 pm at St. Raphael. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (www.alzfdn.org).
