Ellen Louise Newman Cumb, age 98, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was born in North Birmingham, AL on April 21, 1919 to Dell Newman, a Birmingham police officer, and his wife, Viola. The family moved to East Lake where Ellen grew up attending Barrett and Robinson elementary schools and Woodlawn high school. Her adventurous nature lended itself well to her travels with her husband as part of their military life.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Dellaware and Viola Newman; husband, Raymond Funston Cumb; brother, Dellaware Newman Jr; and sister, Sarah Marie Rivers, all of Birmingham, AL.
She is survived by her brother, Charles Newman of Scottsboro, AL; daughter, Marsha Raye Cumb of Raleigh, NC; daughter-in-law, June Spurlock of High Springs, FL; granddaughters, Genie French of Cary, NC, Sylvia French-Hodges of Raleigh, and Natalie Cumb of High Springs, FL; grandsons, Douglas French of Grand Haven, MI and Erick Cumb of High Springs; and four great-grandsons, Seth Hodges, Michael Woods, Ben French, and Dax Cumb.
The family would like to express its appreciation to Capital Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Raleigh for their care and kind attention toward her, to Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC and Ridout's Chapel in Trussville, AL for all their help and support.
After sixty moves, Ellen was finally returned home and buried in Forest Hills Cemetery with her family.
