Reverend George A. Aist died on September 6, 2025 at the age of 92 with family at his side. A retired Methodist minister whose career spanned 50 years, George’s life was a testament to grace, patience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others.
Originally from Cheltenham, MD, George was born on August 5, 1933. He grew up on the family farm in Cheltenham, then known as Aist Brothers Dairy, where he learned the values of hard work, humility, and stewardship of both land and spirit. After graduating from Gwynn Park High School, he attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky where he met the love of his life, his beloved Mary. They were married for 64 years.
Answering the call to ministry in his early twenties, he earned a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in 1962 and became an ordained minister in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. George went on to serve at multiple churches across the conference. In 1968, George began a two-year chaplaincy program at St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., and later pursued graduate studies at Drew University in grief counseling. This became a defining aspect of his ministry and one of his greatest gifts. Many found solace in his presence and guidance when they needed it most, as he walked with countless individuals and families through life’s hardest moments.
Those early years also shaped a lifelong commitment to community. George was a volunteer member of the New Windsor Fire department, became a Freemason and was active in the Prince George’s Soil Conservation District. Later in life, George returned to live on the family farm while serving his last two parishes, and supported his brother Clark in maintaining the farm and their Black Angus cattle. In 2017, George retired to Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD and embraced his last years, remaining active with family, grandchildren, old friends and his new community.
George is survived by daughters, Mary Beth Ahearn and Nancy LaCivita (Emil); grandchildren: Lauren Ahearn (Brett), Joseph Ahearn (Rachael), Olivia Ahearn, Taylor LaCivita, Spencer LaCivita (Maggie), Kyle LaCivita and great grandson Jamie Ahearn. He is preceded in death by his parents Albert Aist and Irene Gaither Aist, wife Mary, brothers Clark, Albert, and sister Francis Irene.
George’s legacy is one of kindness, connection, and faith. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 11:00 am at Cheltenham United Methodist Church, 11111 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD. 20623, followed by a luncheon at the church.
