A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Person County Senior High School, he lived in the Triangle area for most of his life.
Haden is survived by his wife, Elisabeth Smith Lane, and son Peter Gavin Lane of Raleigh; his mother Mary Anne Claude Lane of Raleigh; his mother-in-law Maxine Hyman Smith of Roxboro, NC; and sister-in-law Deanna Smith Sibbald, her husband Paul Sibbald, and their son Jack Sibbald of Alexandria, VA. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. John Haden Lane.
Haden was a lifelong learner with a love of reading and history that made him a wise observer of contemporary culture and a great conversationalist with a dry, often sharp wit. He loved the fellowship of the table and sharing meals prepared with care and attention with family and friends. His study of wine was an intellectual and social pursuit.
Some of his favorite days were spent surf fishing and watching wildlife, especially birds. Haden enjoyed all types of sports. Baseball and basketball, which he played when he was younger, were at the top of the list. He was an avid Virginia Tech fan and loved watching the Hokies, especially on the football field.
Haden’s photographic talents lent themselves well to landscapes, bird watching, and a love of the American Plains, especially the grand vistas of the American Railroad.
Please visit Brown-Wynne website for details of the celebration of life service. Rev. Richard T. Clayton and the Rev. Dr. Peter Bynum will officiate.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Wake County SPCA or the Raleigh Rescue Mission.
