

She was born in a rural community just outside Kinston, NC on February 13, 1919. She graduated Valedictorian from Contentnea High School and moved to Raleigh, NC in the early 1940’s. She married Clarence “Rudolph” Puryear on May 19, 1943, a Raleigh firefighter, who went on to serve as Chief of the Raleigh Fire Department.
Hazel was predeceased by her parents, Herman and Zula West Daughety, and her husband Rudolph (1974); two brothers, Harry and “Jack” Daughety; and three sisters, Ruby Vann, Margaret Davis and Doris Thomas.
Faith and family were at the core of Hazel’s heart and interests. She served her Lord faithfully and trusted in Him for every provision. She was a member of Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. She was a loving wife and mother with a passion for, and dedication to these roles. Beyond the home, she provided for her family as a typesetter for the Biblical Recorder. Following her retirement, she served as a volunteer at Rex Hospital.
She is survived by three sons: Rudy Puryear and wife Linda, of Barrington, IL; Jim Puryear, of Raleigh, NC; and Bobby Puryear and wife Susan, of Raleigh, NC; eight grandchildren; Shanna Hubert; Victoria Foster; Christopher. Michael, Steve, James, David and Jason Puryear; and four great grandchildren: Owen, Henry, River, and Luke Puryear. Any mention of family would always bring a radiant smile to Hazel’s face.
The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 2-3 p.m. at Christ Baptist Church, 400 Newton Rd., Raleigh.
A worship service celebrating Hazel’s life and her service to God and family will follow at Christ Baptist Church on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 3 p.m.
Following the services, interment will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh. Flowers accepted or donations may be made in Hazel’s honor to Christ Baptist Church, Raleigh.
