Jeanne Shelton Hill, 88, of Raleigh and formerly of Charlotte, N.C., quietly passed away at the William Dunlap Hospice Center for Caring, having lost her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. A kind and caring soul to her family and so many others, Jeanne was embraced and loved wherever she went, her smile and joy of living would light up any room. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
Jeanne is survived by Harvey, her husband of 68 years, who was the love of her life, and she the love of his. She is also survived by her daughters Randye Finigan (and husband Jim) and Wendy Lawton (and husband Bill); grandchildren Bill Finigan (and wife Sarah Blake), Debi Dulany and Will Lawton; great-grandchildren William Finigan and Charlotte Lawton.
She graduated from Broughton High School and St. Mary’s College in Raleigh. After World War II, she and Harvey made their lives in Charlotte, where Jeanne worked as the secretary of Cotswold School for 25 years. Jeanne was an active member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church and The Mint Museum in Charlotte. She and Harvey loved to dance and were members of “the Green Gables Gang”, a dance club dating back to the 40’s. She also was active in several bridge clubs and devoted to a close knit group she lovingly referred to as “the lunch bunch”.
In 2005, Jeanne and Harvey moved to Magnolia Glen in Raleigh where she served on many committees and participated in many of their varied activities. In Raleigh she became active with The Friends of the D. H. Hill Library and a member of White Memorial Presbyterian church. Jeanne missed her many friends at Magnolia Glen when her illness necessitated that she move in with family. Her face lit up whenever she returned to visit, as did the faces of those she visited.
In Raleigh, the family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 4th 2010 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Jeanne will be interred in Charlotte and a service will be held there at Myers Park Presbyterian Church Chapel at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6th, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that anyone desiring to do so make contributions either to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607, where she was lovingly cared for by devoted staff during her final days, or to The Friends of the D. H. Hill Library, NCSU Libraries, Campus Box 7111, Raleigh, NC 27695.
The Hill family wants to express their deepest thanks for all the love and care of Jeanne at Rex Hospital, The Cancer Centers of North Carolina and Hospice of Wake County.
