

Joseph Patrick Hirl left this World to his heavenly home on January 2, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Over the past five years, he faced cancer with extraordinary courage and faith, inspiring all who knew him as he defied the odds through God’s grace. In his final moments, Joe was surrounded by the love of his family at home. They take comfort in knowing he now resides in Heaven, free from pain and waiting to be reunited with them.
Joe was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished son, and a steadfast brother. His life was marked by an unwavering kindness and an inspirational spirit that touched countless lives around the World.
His legacy of love, integrity, and faith will continue to inspire and uplift those who were blessed to know him.
Joe’s life was a testament to inspiration, achievement, and dedication. Born in Fullerton, California, Joe moved with his family to Washington, D.C., Greater Metropolitan Area at the age of two. He grew up in Fairfax Station, Virginia, where he attended Burke Elementary and Lake Braddock Secondary School, graduating with High Honors in the class of 1981.
Joe’s academic and leadership excellence earned him a four-year U.S. Navy scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where, as a Notre Dame Scholar, he graduated with Honors in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Committed to serving his country, Joe studied Nuclear Power generation and served as a Nuclear Power Officer aboard the USS Virginia until 1988.
After leaving the Navy, Joe continued to blaze a trail, working as a Nuclear Power Consultant before pursuing an MBA at Harvard Business School, graduating in 1994. His career took him across the globe, first with Enron, where he played a pivotal role in establishing international business ventures in Norway, Australia, and Japan. In 2004, Joe founded Agilis Energy, where he developed several patents and provided cutting-edge energy consulting services to Fortune 500 companies, helping reduce energy consumption in major commercial buildings. In 2018, Agilis Energy was acquired by Trane, where Joe became a Senior Vice President (Energy Solutions). Later, he joined Honeywell as a Senior Vice President responsible as the Chief Commercial Officer for New Product Development, retiring in 2023 after a remarkable career.
Joe’s life extended far beyond his professional achievements. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 34 years, Jennifer Hirl, and a loving father to their children, Caroline Hirl and Jay Hirl. Joe’s deep love for his family also encompassed his brother, Patrick Hirl, his parents, Joseph and Margaret Hirl, and many other cherished relatives and friends.
A Mass in celebration of Joe’s life will be held at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the Church’s Lewis Room.
