Rachel was called home Thursday, January 19, 2012 after a long period of declining health. She lived a long, full life and was a blessing to those who knew her. Those who knew her well , lovingly referred to her as B'bah. It was a nickname given to her by her granddaughter and it caught on.
Rachel was born on Valentine's Day in the Oak Grove community of Franklin County to William Bryant and Eoka Hall Lindsey. One of nine children, she graduated high school and eventually moved to Raleigh in 1932 where she made her home with her husband, Herman. She worked as the first Director of Admissions at Dorthea Dix Hospital for 36 years. She retired, stayed home one year and stayed busy helping her neighbors. In 1973 she joined the staff of Brown Wynne Funeral Home where she worked for another 30 years as a hostess. While at Brown-Wynne, Rachel greeted visitors and families with natural ease, grace and dignity. She provided comfort and reassurance to many families. She retired from Brown-Wynne on her 93th birthday in 2003, and enjoyed her free time and her great grandchildren. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Rachel was a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed in 1956, underwent surgery, and made a full recovery.
In addition to her parents and husband, Rachel was preceded in death by her sisters; Mary Wheeler and Ester Green, brothers; Talmadge, Ed, Graham, Herman, Woodrow, and Jarvis. She is survived by her son, Creighton, daughter-in-law Pat, granddaughter Leigh and husband AC Rich; and great-grandchildren, Abigail, Hannah, and Joshua. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Eldred, Willie Bea, and Philithia and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will take place on Monday, January 23, 2012 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road at 1:00pm. Visitation with the family will immediately precede the service at 11:30. A private burial will follow the service.
