R. Scott Sherman passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 7th, 2012. He was born on March 4th, 1936 in Olympia, WA. to B.R. Sherman and Gladys Fraser Graham. His family moved to San Francisco early on and he graduated from Lowell HS in SF before being accepted to the University of California at Berkeley. What followed was a 58 year love affair with the University which saw him become Sophomore Class President, Executive Vice President of the ASUC, Chair of the Memorial Union Advisory Board, member of the Order of the Golden Bear and Cal Club, a life-long member of Theta Delta Chi, and, after graduation in 1958, Assistant to Athletic Director Pete Newell, and eventually Executive Director of the California Alumni Association. Over the years, he was a fixture at Cal sporting events and the Lair of the Golden Bear in Pinecrest, CA. As Permanent Secretary of the Class of 1958, he played a significant role in planning reunions and contributing Class Notes for California Magazine, the Alumni Association's periodic publication.
Scott's second love affair began on November 30th, 1963 when he married the former Gretchen Garrett Wetter of Red Bluff, CA. Their 48 ½ year odyssey carried them from the Bay Area, to Southern California, back to the Bay Area, and eventually home to Red Bluff. Scott's career spanned many different organizations but his heart was always in non-profits. Beyond working for the University and the California Alumni Association, he served as Executive Director of the Life Underwriters and as Executive Director of the Alta Bates Summit Foundation.
Scott was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff and the Thursday Morning Breakfast Group. He was also heavily involved in tracking his (and any other family's) genealogy through the centuries!
Scott is survived by his wife Gretchen, son and daughter-in-law, Ian and Pam Sherman of Roseville, CA, grandchildren Jackson (14) and Josie (12) of Roseville; daughter and son-in-law Heather and Ron Tapia of Antioch, CA, grandchildren Garrett (9) and Reese (5) of Antioch, CA; sister Sandy Tatti of Jerome, ID, sister Linda Sherman of Modesto, CA, brother-in-law John Birnie of Salem, OR; niece Allison Birnie of Pasadena, CA, nephew Matt Birnie of Crested Butte, CO, and nephew Steven Birnie of Jerome, ID.
