Roger was born on September 25, 1939, in San Francisco, CA to Walter Ellery Dawes and Olive Evelyn Pat Shrader Dawes.
Roger graduated from Shasta High School in 1957 then attended Shasta College for a year. He helped his father with roofing jobs at the age of 9 in San Francisco and the Santa Rosa area. Roger lost his mother to cancer at the age of 12 and at 14, his dad moved he and his older brother, Joel, out of the city, to Redding, where he continued working roofing jobs with his dad into his teens. Then Roger began an apprenticeship as a meat cutter at Farmers Market in Redding. Roger went on to become a very successful businessman beginning in 1971 by opening “R and R Quality Meats” with his best friend Robert Blagg, which remains a Redding landmark to this day. A few years after opening the doors of R and R Quality Meats, he became the sole proprietor with his wife Vicky by his side.
One of Roger’s proudest accomplishments was starting the National Championship Women’s Fastpitch Softball Team “The Redding Rebels” as well as coaching the United States National Fastpitch Softball Team to many successes including a Gold Medal at the “World Championships” in New Zealand.
While attending Shasta High School, he met his devoted wife Vicky Jann Keely who he married on February 14th, 1960, until her passing in 2003. Roger and Vicky were married for nearly 44 years and as devoted loving parents had three daughters Kathleen Suzanne Stevens, Patricia Jann Dawes and Laura Diane Dawes along with two grandsons Brandon Roger Dawes Baker and Joseph Russell Baker and a granddaughter Deanna Lynn Archer and 3 great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren.
