Don “Hoot” Akers, 87, of Sandston, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025. Born on July 2, 1938, in Piney, Virginia, Hoot lived a life defined by hard work, unwavering faith, and a deep love for family and community.
Hoot dedicated 38 years of service to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), retiring as the Superintendent of the Elko Residency. Throughout his career, he was known for his meticulous attention to detail and tireless work ethic—qualities that earned him numerous letters of praise from both local citizens and professional peers. His commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on the communities he served.
A man of strong convictions and generous spirit, Hoot believed that your word was your bond and that a handshake carried more weight than any signature. He never met a stranger and had an extraordinary ability to make others feel welcome and valued. His home was always open to those in need—a safe haven where many found comfort and belonging. Among those he embraced as family was Mary Dandridge, who served as his aide during the last year of his life. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Mary, their sister in love and in Christ, for the compassionate care she provided.
Hoot’s faith was central to his life. A member of Samaria Baptist Church in Charles City, VA, he was saved early in life and remained devoted to reading his Bible and sharing his spiritual journey with others. Though health sometimes limited his attendance at services, his belief never wavered.
He found joy in simple pleasures—working on cars, building structures with his hands, watching nature shows, and engaging in spirited discussions about politics. He also had a gift for storytelling that captivated listeners young and old.
Hoot was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Polly Akers; his parents, Elbert and Larmie Akers; and all 18 of his brothers and sisters.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Norma Ross (Tom), Becky Akers, and Laura Walsh (Keith); grandchildren, Kincade Ross (Kayla), Georgia Olivier, Jacob Olivier (Kaila), Keegan Ross, Adin Adkins (Shirby), Kruz Ross, and Avan Adkins; great-grandchildren, Wilder Ross, McKenna Henkel, and Dominic Head; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins—and countless others who were adopted into his heart over the years.
May Don “Hoot” Akers’ legacy of kindness, integrity, and faith continue to inspire all who knew him.
