HAMNER, Elizabeth Flournoy, of Richmond, born June 1, 1943, passed away August 2, 2016. She was preceded in death by parents, Susan and Laurance Hamner; and siblings, Susan Vaughan, Laurance Hamner Jr., Julia Marks and Evelyn Clay. She is survived by one sister, Katherine Pickle; and a circle of faithful friends. Elizabeth received a B.A. in English and master's in education from Longwood College, where she worked for the dean of women and then taught at Huguenot Academy and Manchester Independent School. For 10 years, she traveled the country as executive director of Val Balfour's American Oberammergau Passion Play. In later years, she worked at Raintree Swim & Racquet as coordinator of membership and tennis leagues and accrued as much court time as possible. Bette, as she was known to most, thrived on organizing, be it a tennis round robin or social gathering. She liked to fish, swim, play bridge, grow flowers, attend theater, watch horse races and share good food with friends. A prankster who loved to laugh, Bette donned festive attire for any holiday. She was a staunch Republican, who admired Ronald Reagan and gravitated to pink polish and all things southern. May she rest in peace after 10 years of debilitating health challenges and know that she is loved. Flournoy is a topographic name for someone who lived in a place where flowers grew. When flowers no longer bloomed for Bette here, she was ready to move on. Upon request, no services will be held.
