He was very active for many years in Highland Springs Church of the Nazarene. He bred and raised pigeons for over 50 years and was an excellent pool player. He enjoyed being with his family and dearly loved his late wife, Wanda Faye Yates.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Katherine Yates and brother, Larry Yates, Sr.
He is survived by his son, Wayne Lee Yates, Jr. (Margo); stepdaughter, Laurie Ransom (Akram); six grandchildren; sisters, Jackie Wells (Jerry) and Tina Stone (Chris); several nieces and nephews; and his beloved pet dogs, Kimber and Trevor.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Interment will be in Washington Memorial Park, Sandston.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
