Michael Benjamin Opatovsky

Michael Benjaman Opatovsky was called home on August 11, 2026, in his 91st year. Born in Czechoslovakia on August 23, 1935, Michael and his family came to Ontario, Canada, in 1937. Over the next nine decades, he built a life full of love, laughter, friendship, adventure, and, most importantly, family. His greatest legacy will be the countless memories and moments he shared with those who loved him.

Mike was a devoted family man who cherished the time he spent with the people he loved. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Headi (née Volk) Opatovsky; the love of his life, Carol Opatovsky (née Pelkey); his siblings Albert (Barb) Opatovsky, Fran (Bob) Filipowicz, his twin sister Ann (Miro) Zugerek, and Joseph Opatovsky; and his nephew, Albert Jr. Opatovsky.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Kimberly, Michael James (Geri), Chris (Fraezor) Branzsen, and Tom Opatovsky; his grandchildren Michael Wallace and Meagan Opatovsky, Tamara and Tylor Branzsen; and his great-grandchildren Michael EJ Opatovsky, Meadow and Orlando Rotundo.

Known affectionately as “Uncle Mike” by so many, he was an amazing uncle who loved his extended family dearly. He shared special bonds with his nieces and nephews Fran, Albert, Winn, James, John, David, Greg, Bob, Cindy, Michelle, Dana, Joann, John, along with his many great nieces and nephews.

Mike was very involved in his community and loved being part of activities that brought people together. He participated in the euchre league, coached baseball and hockey, and was proud to be part of the family team affectionately known as “Da Brudders.”

He was also a dedicated volunteer firefighter, serving his community for more than 25 years. His commitment to helping others was an important part of who he was. Mike proudly retired from General Motors after 35 years of service and also spent more than 35 years' operating a company that installed docks at the Buffalo Yacht Club.

Some of Mike’s happiest and most cherished memories were made during the many summers spent at Powassan and Lake Wasi with family and friends. He was especially proud of the family cottage, which he helped build alongside his brother Albert Opatovsky. The cottage became a special place filled with fishing trips, boat rides, laughter, and quiet moments that his family will treasure forever.

Mike and Carol were a lively couple and could often be found at Lino’s, enjoying a cold beverage, good conversation, and time with family and friends. They loved being surrounded by the people they cared about and created countless memories together throughout their years.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Gilmore Lodge for the care, kindness, and compassion shown to our beloved Mike. We cannot thank you enough for the support you provided to Mike and our family.

A service to celebrate the late Michael Opatovsky will be conducted at the Crystal Ridge Community Centre lead by David Opatovsky, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, starting at 1:00p.m.
