Charlotte Rosebel Carty

It is with great sadness that the family of Charlotte Rosebel Nickerson Carty announces her passing, on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at the age of 98 years. She was surrounded by loving family in her final hours.

Charlotte will be lovingly remembered by her children Dianne (Will Fiches) Medford, Massachusetts and Nancy (William McDevitt)Lake Orion, Michigan. Charlotte will also be fondly remembered by her three grandchildren, Eric, Ryan and John. She is survived by her brother George, six great grandchildren, George, Max, Wills, Molly, Nora and Jack, and many nieces and nephews. Charlotte was predeceased by her adored husband, George William Carty, her brothers, Osborne, Adelbert and Alexander, her sisters, Agnes, Marguerite, Gertrude, Susan, Fanny and Mary.

Charlotte was born on Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia on January 19, 1920. She met her future husband, George William Carty, while he was on leave from military duty in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. They were married in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on October 11, 1947 and came to the United States to live three days later. They made their homes and raised their daughters in Medford and Waltham, Massachusetts. Sadly, her beloved George passed away in April, 1980, at the age of 59. She left Waltham to live in Chatham, Massachusetts where her ancestors (Nickerson) landed in 1656, and became involved in several volunteer opportunities including the Barnstable hospital, the Atwood House and activities at the Chatham Public Library.

Charlotte loved books, music and art and passed those loves down to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling and visited Bermuda, China, England, Scotland and Wales. She was also a fierce Scrabble competitor and many memorable family hours were spent around the Scrabble board.

Charlotte's final eight years were spent in Michigan.

A family memorial service is being planned and will be held in Massachusetts.
