He claimed to not be a good student but received his bachelor’s degree from Lehigh University and had a long career as a Metallurgical Engineer for GE, Black and Decker, and predominantly Rolled Alloys, where he retired as the Director of Technology.
James was a member of Detroit Sportsman’s Club, Kentucky Rifle Association, and got involved in many groups that also share a passion for the past, animals and the outdoors. For a while he was an avid dancer where he met his “dance partner” Lenora. He had a passion for materials, collecting and making things, especially antique firearms and decoy ducks. He had a fondness for PIE, antiques, history, people, and learning the quirks of every culture he encountered as he travelled the world. He directed his creative energy into oil painting more recently and enjoyed his time at Paint Creek Center for the Arts.
James is preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Florence Kelly, Aunt Louise and his late wife Donna Kelly.
He is survived by his long-time companion Lenora Lutz; his children Andrew (Joan) Kelly and Garrett (Kristen) Kelly; grandchildren Quirin and Atlas; faithful furry friend Winnie; and his cousin Marjorie Borley as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday December 21, 2023 with instate time from 10:00 am to 11:00 am and the service beginning at 11:00 am at the same location.
