Robert Warren Lewis, 76, of Shelby Township, Michigan, passed away August 9, 2019. He was born in Mansfield, Ohio, on February 4, 1943. Robert (Bob) was an Eagle Scout and a National Merit Scholar. He graduated with High Honors and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He attended graduate school at the University of Michigan where he earned his Masters degree in Mathematics and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering. His research as a National Science Foundation Trainee focused on coherent optics, holography, and synthetic aperture radar. Bob was a Senior Research Scientist for 14 years at General Motors Research Labs in Warren, Michigan. His research there focused on optical imaging and measurement. He published nine scientific papers and received five patents. At age 44, Bob chose to leave GM to pursue a career in teaching mathematics and statistics. After completing graduate coursework in education at Wayne State University, he taught as an Adjunct Mathematics Professor at Oakland and Macomb Community Colleges. He also enjoyed tutoring high school students in subjects from pre-algebra to calculus. Outside of his careers, Bob was passionate about his family and greatly enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He was an avid racquet sports enthusiast, a southpaw with formidable spins, and enjoyed tennis, ping pong, pickleball, and meeting friends at the Sterling Heights Senior Center.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Warren and Dora Lewis of Mansfield, OH.
He is survived by his children Krista Lewis Abedrabbo (and Krista’s husband Nader) and Timothy J. Lewis (and Tim’s wife Margie), his grandchildren Adelyn and Ava Abedrabbo, Eleanor and Kate Lewis, and his sisters Jean Conlan and Dorothy Schobert, as well as many friends and former students.
