Born to Norman and Ardis (Wilson) Zoellner in Detroit, Michigan, Tom grew up with a deep love for cars, creativity, and competition—whether on the water, in the woods, or in the stands of his grandkids' sporting events. A proud graduate of Lutheran High School East’s Class of 1961, he carried lifelong friendships and school pride with him.
Tom made his mark as a creative director in the automotive world, playing a key role in shaping iconic brands like Dodge, Audi and Volkswagen. He was part of the team behind Dodge’s legendary “Take Life by the Horns” tagline—a phrase that perfectly captured the way he lived his own life.
A man of many passions, Tom found joy in boating, hunting, woodworking, and cheering (sometimes loudly) for Detroit’s sports teams. His greatest pride, however, was his family. He was married for over 40 years to Marsha Heyn, with whom he raised a family in Lake Orion. After Marsha’s passing in 2013, Tom found a second chance at love, reuniting with his high school classmate Carole Seth, whom he married at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. His faith remained a guiding force throughout his life, and he was an active leader in his church community.
Tom never missed an opportunity to support his grandchildren, whether from the bleachers or the sidelines—offering both encouragement and, when necessary, his unfiltered thoughts on a referee’s call. He was a constant presence, a patient mentor, and a source of unwavering love.
Tom is survived by his wife Carole, sister Debbe (Al) Defever; children Whitney (Jason) Powers, Stacey (Craig) DeRoche, and Ryan (Lori) Zoellner; stepchildren Tracey Callahan and Brad (Kristina) Seth; and his beloved grandchildren: Carley DeRoche, Chloe Callahan, Kendall Liddell, Braedyn Callahan, Zoe DeRoche, Noah Seth, Blake Liddell, Phoebe DeRoche, Isabella Seth, Brecken Powers, Emerie Powers, and Frankie Zoellner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marsha, his parents and sister, Claudia.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at noon at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1950 South Baldwin Road, Lake Orion, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s honor to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Tom took life by the horns—living it fully, loving fiercely, and leaving behind a legacy of creativity, faith, and family. He will be deeply missed.
