Alice Mary “Babe” McKenzie (Waltman), formerly of Monaca, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2017 at the age of 88. Babe was born on October 27, 1929 in Chicora, PA to Frank and Margarete Waltman. She graduated from Chicora High School and soon after married the love of her life, William Warren “Bill” McKenzie. After their marriage, Babe and Bill moved to Texas for Bill’s career in the military, and over the next few years they welcomed both of their sons, William “Billy Joe” and David.
The family then moved back to Monaca, PA where they opened the local Dairy Queen business on Franklin Avenue in downtown Aliquippa. After 29 years next to the Aliquippa Library, they moved the Dairy Queen business to Broadhead Road in Hopewell where they served ice cream for 14 years. Babe greeted customers day after day, touching the lives of ice cream lovers near and far with her zest for life and her love of meeting new people.
Babe is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Margarete Waltman, sister, Tootie Callihan, and her granddaughter, Sydney Rae McKenzie. She is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 68 years, William McKenzie; son William McKenzie, Jr and his wife, Kathy McKenzie; son, David McKenzie and his wife, Jean McKenzie; grandchildren, Kait McKenzie Fiumara, Megan McKenzie, Mallory Hink, and Jordan McKenzie; and four great grandchildren.
A private funeral service was held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC. and she will be laid to rest in the Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum.
