Ernest Robbins, age 90, of Dixfield, passed away at home on 12/12/14. Born 8/4/24 at the Robbins family farm in East Dixfield, Ernest was a Marine veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific at age 19. He worked for the state highway department after the war, then at Oxford Paper Company for 35 years, retiring at age 62. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion.
Ernie was a humble, honest, hard-working, caring man. He defined "richness" through his appreciation and enjoyment of the simple things in life. He never wanted to "bother" anyone, yet was first to help others, unconditionally. During his retirement years, he enjoyed daily coffee and visits with his brother Sherwood. He was a nature lover, avid gardener, outdoorsman, sports enthusiast. Among his many interests were hunting, fishing, family, and watching his son and nephews race at Oxford Plains Speedway.
He was a huge fan of Dirigo basketball, attending all home games until able to do so due to poor health. He knew the names of every player. He especially enjoyed attending sporting events and other activities of his great grandchildren, Sophie and Spencer. Ernie had a great love of family, his friends, his community and his Canadian ancestry. He had a great zest for life, and a great sense of humor, playing many pranks on his nephews who live nearby. His favorite night of the year was Christmas Eve, when he and Theresa always hosted a terrific open house for family and friends.
Ernest is survived by his wife of 67 years, Theresa LaPointe-Robbins, son Jim Robbins and his fiancé Lori Chase of Rumford, daughters Sharon George and her husband Tony of Huntsville, Alabama and Worthley Pond, Patty Brown and her husband John of Harford, Maine, and Judy Robbins of Old Orchard Beach and Dixfield, Maine, grandchildren Anthony Stanley, Cameron Stanley Joel George, Christopher George, Jennifer George, and Stephanie and Corey Jacques, great grandchildren Sophia and Spencer Jacques, sisters Barbie Buzzell of Dixfield and Muriel McAuley of Farmington, brothers Walter of Norfolk, Virginia and David of Farmington, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ernest was predeceased by his mother and father, John and Evelyn Robbins, and brothers' Alston, Oscar, Richard, Sherwood, Vernon, and Vivian.
From the bottom of our hearts, Ernest's family would like to thank Drs. Lee and Sinclair, and his nurses Julie and Laura for wonderful care. Also family, friends, and neighbors for gifts of food and get-well cards, visits, including grandchildren and great grandchildren that he enjoyed: Thank You All.
Thanks to Rumford Community Hospital for great care for many times he was there and to S.G. Thibault Funeral Home for their compassion and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to Androscoggin Home Health 15 Strawberry Ave PO Box 819 Lewiston, ME 04243-9800.
