

Virginia Ann Dulany of Wheeling, WV passed away peacefully supported by her family on March 20, 2022, at Liza’s Place. She was born January 8, 1932, in Salisbury, MD, the daughter of Ralph and Alice Reihl Dulany of Fruitland, MD. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, David L. Dulany, John H. Dulany II, Charles R. Dulany, her sister-in-law, Betty Taylor Dulany, her dear love Troy Wilson Ashcraft, her nephew Dennis Dulany and her grandson, Nicolas Hofreuter Landini. Virginia is survived by her daughters, Nancy O’Hara (Ken McCabe) of Milford, CT and Elizabeth Hofreuter of Wheeling, WV; her grandchildren Jake Henry O’Hara, Grace Hofreuter Landini and Ella Hofreuter Landini; her sister-in-law Pauline Duckett Dulany as well as nieces Blythe DeBlasis Watkins (Brad), Linda Pyke (Adrian) and Cindy Hardy, and nephews Rod Dulany, Page Dulany (Cheryl), Paul Dulany (Deb) and their children and grandchildren who she loved dearly.
Virginia has always been an activist and a trailblazer. After graduating from The Westtown School (PA), and Bryn Mawr College, she was one of only twelve women in her class of 120 at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where she graduated in 1954. After a decade of service in Well Child Clinics for the Ohio County Health Department, she practiced family medicine with her first husband, Donald H Hofreuter MD, in Wheeling WV and retired as Medical Director at Deers Head Center in Salisbury MD in 2015.
Virginia was an active member in Rotary and other community organizations: a past director of the United Way, past president of Florence Crittenton Home, co-founder of the AIDS Task Force of the Upper Ohio Valley in 1987, and served on boards for Visiting Nurses Association, Children & Family Services in Wheeling, as well as the MAC (Maintaining Active Citizens) Center, the Holly Center and Hudson Health Services in Salisbury, MD. She was honored as Outstanding Public Health Leader for Wicomico County MD in 2006. She was a member of the founding board of West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling and a director of First National Bank in WV. She was a member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wheeling.
Smitten with wanderlust, Virginia traveled widely with friends and family including annual missionary trips to Puerto Rico with the Western North Carolina Methodist Church.
On Saturday, June 18 at 11 am a Community Gathering and Remembrance with Interment of ashes at St John’s Church in Fruitland will be held outside at burial site. There will be a tent in case of rain.
