He was born in 1930 in Brooklyn, New York to Alfred and Jean Busby. Al lived a full and remarkable life and is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara, and his children Alison Agnew (Randy), Melissa Fernlund (Greg), and Steven Busby (Nicole); 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Al was predeceased by his sons William and Kenneth.
Al grew up in Garden City, Long Island and graduated from Colgate University where he studied mathematics, developed lifelong friendships, and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Al and Barbara married in 1960 and throughout their life together enjoyed travel, dining, bridge, and many good friends. Al was an avid golfer from ages 8 to 94 and could frequently be found on the courses at Capital City Club where he regularly ‘shot his age.’ Capping a career in aviation insurance brokerage, Al served as president of Frank B. Hall & Co. of Georgia prior to its acquisition by Aon Corp.
Al revered integrity and ‘moral fiber,’ traits he honed in business as well as on the golf course and passed along to his family. He was an avid reader, gardener, woodworker, outdoor enthusiast, and history buff. His retirement in 1988 afforded him plenty of time for hobbies, spending time on Hilton Head Island, and volunteering, including serving as a guardian ad litem for Fulton County Juvenile Court, helping maintain the grounds at local parks and, along with Barbara, working at the polls and ushering at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
A celebration of the life of Alfred William Busby Jr. will be held at Northwest Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 3:30 p.m.
