

Martha (Marty) Scholfield Michel, 85 of Atlanta, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Canton Nursing Center. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm Wednesday, March 27 at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in Sandy Springs with a reception to follow at the church. Marty asked for donations to be made to Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in lieu of flowers. Martha was born January 26, 1928 in Fort Scott, Kansas. One of seven children born to Walter and Beulah (Luman) Scholfield, she was reared on a farm west of Fort Scott and attended a country grade school. After completing high school Martha attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. Martha (then known as Marty) met Charles Michel through a blind date in 1951 while Charlie was on a work assignment in Kansas. They soon married and settled down in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to rearing four children, Marty held a number of jobs through the years. Most notably, she became a high level sales director for Vivian Woodard Cosmetics and later a member of the Million Dollar Club with her successful real estate career. In addition to her parents, Marty was preceded in death by her husband Charles Michel and her brothers Gene Scholfield, Mick Scholfield, Dick Scholfield and Joe Scholfield. Survivors include her son, Craig Michel of Tucker, GA; her daughters Debra Layton and husband Mike of St. Augustine, FL; Marlene Alligood and husband Joel of Roswell, GA; Charis Burgin and husband Tom of Canton, GA and her grandchildren Tina Layton Smekar, Shane Layton, Julia Alligood McCullough, Will Alligood, John Burgin, Elese Burgin and Jackson Burgin.
