November 23, 1951 – November 11, 2025
George "Butch" Wade Downey, age 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. He was born on November 23, 1951, in Mobile, Alabama.
Butch was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. He cherished the days spent at the hunting camp in Putnam, Alabama, where countless memories were made. Whether fishing with his boys, coaching at a ballpark or cheering on his children and grandchildren at their many activities, Butch was happiest when surrounded by the ones he loved. He worked in the Lab at Holcim Cement Plant in Theodore, Alabama for 34 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George B. and Regina Hankins Downey, and his sisters, Brenda Pendergrass and Linda Downey.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 46 years, Sherril Downey; two sons, Jarrod (Rachel) Downey and Cliff (Stephanie) Downey; five beloved grandchildren, Lillie, Gracie, Max, Caroline and Lucy; his sister, Sheila Downey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Butch will be remembered for his kind heart and deep love for his family. His legacy of devotion, laughter, and strength will continue to live on in all who knew him.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, Alabama. Welles Housh will officiate Butch's service.
Pallbearers for Butch's service will be Jeff Rutz, Greg Green, Eric Lynch, Kenny McWain, Harrell Downey and Shannon Pendergrass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Redemption Church designated to the Birthday 4 Jesus Fund.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Mobile Infirmary MICU and LTAC units, as well as the staff of The Retreat at Saad’s, for their exceptional care, compassion, and kindness during Butch’s time of need.
