Joseph “Joe” Savell died on Saturday in the home he built 63 years ago in which to raise his family, and devote his life to his lovely bride, Joy Dell (Smith) Savell. Joe honored and upheld his marital vows to Joy Dell for 67 years, until death parted them. Their union produced four children; Joseph Bryan Savell, Jr. (Dahn); Denise Savell Smith (Tom); Herbert Gordon Savell, Sr. (Patricia); and Tracy Lee Savell, who preceded his father in death. Joe and Joy Dell are blessed with a granddaughter, Ashley Joyelle Smith (Moa) born to Carl and Denise Smith; Herbert Gordon, II, Katherine Elizabeth and William Edward Bryan Savell, born to Patricia and Gordon Savell, and a great-grandchild, Herbert Gordon Savell, III. Joe also had a very special bond with young Jacob Stine, who called him “Pops.” Joseph enjoyed an extended family of uncles, aunts, cousins, as well as nieces and nephews. The family is especially appreciative to his nieces, Cindi Smith Roe and Melanie Smith for their tireless dedication to their uncle’s comfort and dignity in his final months. Joe was born August 24, 1927 to Pinkie Gill Savell and Herbert Bryan Savell in the house his father built to raise his family of four sons, Joseph Bryan (Joy Dell), Fred Bass (Pauline), Robert George (deceased) (Isabelle), John Herbert (Jean) and three daughters, Ethel, Ruth (deceased), and June Marie. Teaching by example, Pinkie and Herbert instilled in their children, responsibility, a strong work ethic, commitment, faith in God, honesty and humility. Joseph embraced and lived by the teachings of his youth his entire life. Like his father he became a carpenter and took pride in his membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Longtime member of Myers Memorial Baptist Church, former pastor, Reverend Paul Lee often referred to him as “the salt of the Earth”. He will be greatly missed by his devoted and loving wife, Joy Dell, and all those that knew and loved him. The family respectfully request in lieu of flowers that any gift of remembrance be made to Myers Memorial Baptist Church of Eight Mile in Joseph’s name. Visitation will be held Friday, December 16, 2016 at 10am. Funeral Service begins at 11am, both to be held at Radney Funeral Home, Saraland. Committal Service held immediately afterwards at Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Eight Mile. The family would like to extend an invitation to join them at Myers Memorial Baptist Church where members of the church are preparing lunch for anyone who would like to join them. Online condolences may be offered at www.radneyfuneralhome-saraland.com.
