Marie Poulos Gordon, 101, was born on May 20, 1920, in Tennille, Georgia, to the late George Apostolou and Lula Mae (Boyd) Poulos. Called home by her Savior, Jesus Christ, Marie passed on October 31, 2021, in Spanish Fort, Alabama.
During WWII, Marie worked as a secretary at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina where she met her late husband of more than fifty years, Frederick H. Gordon. For many years, Marie taught all levels of Sunday school from children to adults. After raising her three boys, she became a medical secretary and, following Fred’s retirement, she developed into an accomplished artist, painting landscapes and other scenes.
During Marie’s later years, she regularly exercised, becoming particularly expert on the rowing machine, which she continued to use past her 100th birthday. She also enjoyed line dancing and led the group at Westminster Village for a number of years. Her motto was “Keep Moving.”
Marie loved spending time with her family on the beach at Gulf Shores and being kept up to date on the happenings with her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her big smile and contagious laugh were unforgettable as was her kind, caring and compassionate heart.
Her parents, a daughter-in-law, Carol Gordon, and a baby sister, Helen Elizabeth Poulos, who lived only six months, have preceded Marie in passing.
Marie is survived by her three sons: Ken Gordon, Greg Gordon and wife Kathy, and Geoff Gordon; fourteen grandchildren: Beth, Matt and wife Caitlin, Paul and wife Rachel, Rebecca and husband Phil, Debbie, Jon, Dan, Steve, Tom, Connor, Brent, Bryan and wife Mel, Steve, and Kim; and nine great-grandchildren: Avery, Isaac, Freddie, Alexis, Sam, Mackenzie, Phil IV, Daisy and Penny. All of them, along with extended family members and friends, will remember and cherish many wonderful memories of Marie’s strength, humor, wisdom and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, Marie’s life can be honored through donations to Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, the Parkinson’s Foundation, and Boys Ranch.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bob Stauffacher, the chaplain at Westminster Village, whom Marie loved and admired, Barry Cayson, Marie’s good friend and long-time trust officer at Regions Bank, Amie Birt, the fitness instructor at Westminster Village, who kept Marie in great shape during her 22-year stay there, all the other folks at Westminster, including the Home Care team, who provided wonderful service to and care for Marie during her time there, and the folks at St. Joseph Hospice who provided comfort for Marie in her final days. The family would also like to thank the Westminster folks who worked so hard to provide Marie a memorable 100th birthday celebration, including a wonderful meal and assistance with a Zoom video call attended by almost 30 family members, during the difficult 2020 COVID year.
