Susan valued education and would later go on to receive a Master of Science in Education from the University of South Alabama as well as a Master of Science in Geosciences from Mississippi State University. She taught at Bellevue East in Nebraska, elementary education at Satsuma Christian School, and middle school science with the Mobile County Public School System at Calloway Smith in the Orange Grove neighborhood and Dunbar Magnet School from which she retired. She cared deeply about her students and had a profound impact on many lives.
Susan was an accomplished musician, studying piano at the University of South Alabama. Her great devotion to God and strong faith led her to perform as church pianist at First Baptist Church in Satsuma for over 32 years. Prior to this, she served as church pianist at multiple United Stated Air Force base chapels at Barksdale AFB, LA, RAF Bentwaters, UK, and as pianist and organist at the Capehart Chapel and base Chapel at Offutt AFB, NE, even playing for Gen. Curtis LeMay’s memorial service at Strategic Air Command Headquarters. She also performed with Mobile’s Elsewhen orchestra for six years beside her daughter Heather.
Her other interests were diverse. Her interest in science led to her geosciences degree which involved extensive research in the Mobile Delta area as well as chasing tornados with Mississippi State throughout the Midwest. She was a well-traveled individual. She lived in England for three years and visited most Western European countries, with her favorites being Italy and Greece with their rich history. She enjoyed the beach, gardening, and was an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing meals for her family.
Susan was intelligent, caring, and positively affected all of those around her. Those who knew her were fortunate to have her in their life. She loved God, her family, and her life. She always served others and led an existence full of joy. She will be remembered fondly as a remarkable and strong woman. She truly left the world a better place for having been in it. Her legacy is the lives she affected, the people she touched and inspired, and the love and memories she gave us all.
