The Huguley family share our deepest condolences in the loss of Dr. Bruce Hern and we are praying for Sue and the family. The Hern’s family dentistry was a second family to the Huguley’s. Our sons Alan and Terrell went to Hern’s Family Dentistry their entire life and knew no other dental practice until the Hern’s retired. The office was always so pleasant and I loved the magazine racks!! My wife and I went there for over 20 years. May God’s Grace, Mercy and Comfort be with the family. I am so sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. He was a great mentor to me growing up and I have so many fond memories of my time spent with Sam, Sue, Olivia and Bruce. He was always so kind and friendly, I will miss him! Thinking of you all in this tough time!

It is difficult to find the words to express the sadness that comes with learning of Bruce's passing. He captured the meaning of  living a full life  -  bursting with  fun, laughter (sometimes even at himself) and a great sense of family commitment and community. I can remember clearly the neighborhood parties, ski trips up north, soccer games and of course toilet papering his house on Green Rd - for a milestone birthday (yes, I'll finally admit it was us!). But, most of all I'll remember the gleam in his eye when he was tempted with something "fun!" - which was almost always met with a "yes". And - the unforgettable gleam in his eye when speaking about Sue, Sam & Olivia with the utmost pride and love. I have way too many memories to recall. I’ll be 26 on 11/4 and I’ve been going to Dr. Bruce and Dr. Bob since I started getting teeth. I still remember seeing the paper charts and seeing visit notes from 1999. Their office was like another family for me and my sisters. My sincerest condolences to the Hern family. Dr. Bruce will be missed dearly by so many in the Ypsilanti community. Thank you for all of the years of dental service.

Bruce was one of my “army buddies” from dental school, one of the few who stood the test of time.   
 We lived in the same house in Ann Arbor while in dental school.  I’d venture to his apartment upstairs after an evening of study to “unwind” and hangout.  He was fun, honest, fair… and real…he never had an agenda . We never argued.   It was perfect when Bruce got together with Sue, it made him more complete.  After graduation we all ended up in the same apartment complex in Royal Oak, MI.     We tested out our skills as novice dentists while contemplating taking on the world beyond.   We both had a passion for heading out west.   Bruce had this thing for Arizona and I for California.
We rented a 24 ft. truck, loaded our worldly possessions and took off.  We landed in Tucson where Bruce and Sue were to start a new life…I continued on to California which became my permanent residence. We always kept in touch.
After a couple years Bruce and Sue moved back to Michigan when Bruce joined Bob in their family dental practice.  The wilder side of Bruce had been reined in by a sensible approach to life. The family bonds acted as a tractor beam and the Arizona dream faded.  Life in the Hern household appeared beautiful and I sensed no regrets as the Herns moved back to the “oasis” in Michigan known as Ann Arbor.   I was fortunate to share time with Bruce and Sue over the years during visits, phone calls, emails and texts.
Bruce and Sue moved to Florida!  Dentistry done, relive the dream and spirit that was smoldering.  I was elated to know of Bruce’s joy.   He would say that he would pinch himself to verify that it was real.  He had been so excited!  I missed visiting this spring due to the pandemic…but will always smile as I think of my good friend Bruce. ..I was fortunate to have him in my life and cherish the memories.    
To Sue, Sam, Olivia, Bob, Laurel, family and all that knew him …I am so sorry for your loss.

Our thoughts and hearts go out to you at this time. We are so sad to learn of Bruce’s passing. He was always a ray of sunshine for us—optimistic, engaging, and kind. Spending time with him (and you all) whether in the neighborhood, at a Tigers game, and most recently visiting in Nokomis (picture attached from March 2019), was always great fun. We will long remember and savor those memories. He loved all of you so much. There is much about living that we can learn from his life. He was curious, friendly, multitalented and always interested in what others had to offer. He loved joining us on the deck, coming over for parties and get togethers and we loved the times we got to spend with him. We’re so disappointed that COVID prevented us from visiting again this year and will treasure the excitement he shared with us when welcoming us to your new digs in Florida. We hope your happy memories will help you through the grief of this difficult time. We send our love and hugs.

It is a very sad time to know that Bruce is no longer here with us. I worked for he and Bob for thousands of days over 34 years. Bruce was a great boss, we had lots of great times together at the office and I  am happy to say it turned into a great friendship.
Bruce was a genuine man, caring, kind, and considerate. He cared about me and my family and that meant the world to me. Doug and I spent an evening with he and Sue this past Febuary and he was happy, healthy and tan!!

Uncle Bruce was always kind and happy. When I was very little I would sit on his lap in the Pontiac Firebird and steer the car around Grandpa Mickey’s neighborhood. We always had fun at the lake. Uncle Bruce would let me use the wind surf board. I remember being the ring bearer at the wedding.  I remember going for rides in the corvette. Uncle Bruce was always smiling. He was always interested to hear how things are going. I will miss him so much.

I can't express how much I am in shock with the passing of Bruce.  I consider Bruce one of my closest friends.  We shared so many wonderful memories over the past 40 years. Just spoke with him last week and he didn't hint about any of his struggles. He was so excited to share that Olivia was engaged.. Bruce was one of a kind..

I'm so very saddened to hear of the passing of my friend Bruce today.  I will always remember him as my best friend.  We shared the interests of, Dentistry and blues guitar, and from the day we first met, I knew we would be life long friends.  Bruce was a great listener with an overwhelming kindness and caring manner.  His sense of humor could make me laugh time and time again.  We shared so many fun times together and I'll always remember them like it was yesterday.  I will miss him dearly, and find that words cannot adequately express what a great friend he was to me. Uncle Bruce was the absolute highlight in any conversation. He was the funniest, sweetest man, and I always knew I would start laughing once the conversation got going. Growing up and visiting him and family in Ann Arbor on a regular basis, I couldn't wait to get there so he would take us on a walk or for a ride on our bikes that we had brought in the van all the ay from Cleveland. He always saw our play time through our eyes and our imaginations; and I'll never forget that he spent time with the kids on our terms, always making it the best time! In the short time we have been neighbors, we have felt very close to the both of you.  Guy enjoyed the many times he and Bruce walked together and we always looked forward to seeing him outside working in the gardens.  There are no words to express to you how much he will be missed.  ALWAYS know that we are here for you for anything you may ever need.  Our hearts go out to you, Olivia, and Sam.  

Bruce was such a fun dad to be around growing up with Olivia. Whether he was entertaining us with his Weird Al song ideas, cracking jokes, or writing thank you cards to Mountain Dew he always laughed easily and everyone around him did the same. He was such a warm and welcoming person that I felt right at home at the Herns.

I feel so lucky to have known him and will keep many happy memories of him. Sending all my love to Olivia, Sam, and Sue.

It was hard remembering that Bruce was "only" a cousin and not an uncle because our families would get together for so many great events and holidays. He will be missed greatly and not forgotten.  Sending love to Sue, Olivia and Sam in this difficult time. We will always be there for you!

When I was little I couldn't pronounce Bruce for some reason. So I called him Uncle Haystack. He was so kind with those around him and willing to give his time to the family. It was always nice to see him when visiting Michigan. 

I'll also never forget the time he bought a C5 Vette to match Bob's IROC-Z28. They should have had a theme song together.
