
Born on September 18, 1930 in Cleveland, OH, Leonard was the son of Jack Kritzer and Dora Milstein Kritzer. He received his education from John Adams High School, Western Reserve University Cleveland (class of 1952), and The Ohio State University Medical School (class of 1956). While in college, Leonard was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and the Phi Sigma Delta fraternity. He then served his Medical Internship and Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital of Cleveland, and he served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force.
Dr. Kritzer practiced as an OB/GYN physician from 1964 to 1991 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where he also served as Chief of Staff. He was a faculty member of Wright State University Medical School in Dayton and a teaching physician at Miami Valley Hospital. He held professional affiliations in the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American College of Surgeons.
In addition, Dr. Kritzer served his religion as a board member of Temple Israel in Dayton, Ohio and, following his retirement, as a board member of Temple Emmanuel in Sarasota, Florida.
Leonard retired with his wife, Jane, to Sarasota, Florida in 1991. He then began his second career as a volunteer physician at the Senior Friendship Center, where he worked for 24 years. During that time, he also practiced as a volunteer physician at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital free clinic and served on Sarasota Memorial’s Quality Assurance Professional Review Board.
When he wasn’t working, Leonard was the number 1 fan for the Ohio State Buckeye’s football team and was an active member and head of the membership committee of The Ohio State Sarasota Manatee Alumni Association. He was an avid tennis player and reader, enjoyed traveling with his wife, and loved spending time with his family and friends.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Dora Kritzer, and his sister, Phyllis Kritzer Strauss G. Ianni.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Jane Marie Kritzer. In addition, he is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and Eric Lange, Suzanne and Scott Vandergriff, Kathy and Michael Calhoun, Deborah and Steven Paul, and Dr. Patricia and Mr. Stephen Shannon, his sons, Michael Kritzer and Leonard Kritzer Szabo, and his beloved grandchildren, Andrew and Daniel Lange, Samantha and Stephanie Vandergriff, Jacob and Joshua Calhoun, Jacqueline and Adam Paul, and Cleo and Maggie Shannon.
There will be a memorial service for family members and friends on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 12 PM at Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Rd, Sarasota 34232. A reception will follow the service.
