Mary C. Sczyrek May 18, 1955 - April 27, 2021

Mary C. Sczyrek, 65, passed away on April 27, 2021 in Sarasota, Florida. Mary was born in Newark, New Jersey to John Sczyrek and Rose DeMarco. She grew up in Nutley, NJ before she went on to attend Cedar Crest College, in PA. After graduation, she began a career of social work but wanted to expand on her passion of advocating for others, so she earned her Juris Doctor from Seton Hall Law School and went on to become an attorney of the State of New Jersey. Mary eventually moved to Florida, to be closer to family and enjoy the sunshine and weather, with her daughter. She spent the last thirty years living between Venice, Florida and Sarasota before settling in downtown Sarasota to enjoy her retirement. Mary always cherished her times down in Captiva Island, on the beach with her daughter, Mara, shopping for bargains and family get-togethers that always involved a good bottle of wine and some cheese.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Mara Brown (Scott) of St. Petersburg, FL; brother, Joseph Sczyrek (Sarah) of Morristown, NJ; sister Judith Gregorsky (Tom) of Springbrook, PA; and brother, Stanley Sczyrek of Palm Coast, FL.

Mary will be remembered for her keen wit and legal expertise, her big heart for her family and traditions and especially for all those she loved the most, including Lucy, her dog and Henry, her cat. Her recent diagnosis sadly took her from her family's lives too soon, and she will be greatly missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. On Friday, May 14, 2021, a funeral mass will be held 10:00 AM at St Martha Catholic Church, 200 N Orange Ave, Sarasota FL 34236 followed by visitation from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M. at Robert Toale & Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota FL 34232. What a champion this lady was for the children and families in this community. She worked with her intelligent mind, and always acted with her incredible heart. She made lives better and there can be no more beautiful legacy than that.

Mary flies among the angels now with gilded wings. She certainly earned them.

Prayers to her family that they know peace and find comfort in all the memories with her.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mary through Department of Children and Families. She had this wit about her that I just loved. We then worked together at Sunshine Health. I had the honor to be included in Mara’s bridal shower and wedding. I asked Mary to be a bridesmaid the following year. She said you want this old woman in your wedding? My response was yes I want you to be in wedding. She always encouraged me to be a better person. She was my weight watcher buddy. Love you my beautiful dear friend you will be missed by so many.
