

As a Registered Nurse she enlisted in the Navy as an Ensign during WWII stationed in Oakland and eventually San Diego, California. There she met and married her husband. In 1948 they moved to her home town of New Orleans, Louisiana where she continued to work as a Registered Nurse at Touro Infirmary in the capacity of Operating Room Surgical Technician. In 1971 she joined East Jefferson General Hospital, in Metairie, Louisiana as the first Operating Room Director and served in that capacity for 21 years.
Throughout her life she was engaged and participated in multiple clubs serving as a board member and volunteering for special events. She loved entertaining and always opened their home for luncheons and evening parties
Moving to Sarasota in 2005 she continued to entertain and enjoy the company of friends and family. At the age of 90 she decided it was time that they move to Independent Living at The Fountains in Sarasota and let someone else do the
cooking and entertaining. There she made friends immediately and looked forward to “happy hour” and dinner.
Widowed in 2013 she continued to live independently until such time that it became apparent that she move to an assisted/memory care community.
She said “no more birthdays”; mom, you got what you wanted.
She is survived by her two daughters Nancy T. (James) Kopnisky of Sarasota, FL, Joan T. (Michael) Leach of McKinney, TX; grandchildren Kelley A. (Jeff) Derner of Dallas, TX and Ryan C. (Ariana) Amort of Houston, TX and four great grandchildren Vance Charles and Margot Christine Amort and Sloane Dianne and Pierce Michael Derner. She will be inturned at Sarasota National Cemetery.
