

Michael was born on January 15, 1956, in Huntington, New York, to Jack and Gertrude Smilowitz. A proud graduate of Huntington High School, Class of 1973, he worked as a school bus driver for Sarasota County Transportation.
Michael’s greatest accomplishments were being the “World’s Greatest Dad” and a cherished friend to many. Known for his vibrant personality, he enjoyed playing poker, placing professional horse bets, and demonstrating his brilliance by solving life problems effortlessly. Above all, he treasured spending time with his children, family, and friends. With his ever-present smile, Michael brought laughter and joy wherever he went and always went out of his way to support his loved ones.
A passionate sports fan, Michael rooted for the New York Mets and the Rangers, and his favorite music included hits by Kool and the Gang, Celtic Women, and ABBA.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Gertrude Smilowitz, as well as his best friend, Mickey Ben-Tovim. He is survived by his children, Gabrielle Schiliro-Smilowitz (daughter of Elizabeth Robarts) and Jack Smilowitz (son of Yuliya Zada); his former wife, Yuliya Zada; his brother, Bruce Smilowitz; his sister, Rochelle Kaye Stone; and his niece, Cheryl Kaye.
A graveside service will be held at Temple Beth Shalom Cemetery on December 4, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. A celebration of life will follow at the Westin Sarasota (downtown) from 4:00–6:00 p.m.
