December 8, 1941 – October 17, 2025
Norma Jane Richardson Smith, 83, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on October 17, 2025, with her husband of 58 years, Larry Smith; a retired Sarasota County District Fire Chief, standing lovingly by her side.
Born on December 8, 1941, in Manchester, New Hampshire, Norma was the first child of Ted and Josephine Richardson. She shared a special lifelong bond with her cherished brother, Bob Richardson, who now resides in Westmoreland, Tennessee.
Norma’s life was defined by her love for family; her generous heart, and her joyful spirit. She was the proud mother of six children — daughters Kim Rossi (husband Skip) Keri Deann (deceased) of Sarasota, and sons Fred Azar (wife Melanie) of NY, David Azar (wife Kim) of MD, Shannon Smith (wife Lori) of MD, and Michael Smith (wife Karen) of MD. She was also blessed with 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense pride and happiness to her life; she loved them all with her whole heart.
After her husband retired from the Fire Department, Norma and Larry moved to the Chesapeake Bay area, where they spent nearly 20 wonderful years surrounded by family, friends, and the coastal lifestyle they both loved. Later, they returned to Sarasota to enjoy their final retirement years together, close to their daughter and the sunshine they both cherished.
Norma had a deep love for her family and her home. She delighted in visiting her children and grandchildren, especially trips to Maryland where she could enjoy her favorite seafood — particularly steamed crabs. She treasured “girl time” with her daughter, daughters-in-law, and granddaughters, whether shopping, laughing, or simply being together in the kitchen. A talented cook and baker, Norma’s kitchen was the heart of her home, always filled with delicious aromas and laughter. She loved decorating for every holiday, creating a warm and festive atmosphere that made each season special.
Norma also had a tender spot for her golden retrievers through the years, each one dearly loved — with Murphy being her most recent and faithful companion.
A glass of wine in hand, her loved ones nearby, and her golden by her side — that was Norma’s happy place. She will be remembered for her boundless love, her radiant personality, her warmth, and the light she brought to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Services are currently being planned, and those closest to her will be notified when details are finalized.
