He was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on January 26, 1943 to August and Adel Bruning. Dick grew up in Davenport, Iowa with his parents and sister, Nancy (Roseman). Dick graduated from Davenport Central High School and received a Law Degree from the University of Iowa.
He was married to Kay Bruning on August 6, 1966. Dick was a JAG Officer in the Army and served his country in Vietnam from 1970-71. He retired from the military and went on to work for Lockheed Martin for 25 years as its General Counsel.
He was a member of the Retired Lawyer Association, and the Chamber of Commerce, Orlando. He had a passion for collecting model trains, stamps and Smurfs. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.
Dick is survived by his children Kadi Welty and Kevin Bruning, his grandchildren Clayton Welty, Sage Welty, Cooper Bruning, and Tate Bruning, and his sister Nancy Roseman.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church, 7750 S. Beneva Road, Sarasota, FL 34231. Funeral services will follow at 10:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church. Burial will take place on Monday, April 27, 2026 at 10:30 AM at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
